What is DMT?
DMT (N,N-Dimethyltryptamine) is a powerful psychedelic compound belonging to the tryptamine family. It occurs naturally in many plant species and in trace amounts in the human body. It is known for producing intense visual and auditory hallucinations and profound shifts in perception, often described as a “breakthrough” experience.
How does DMT work? DMT primarily functions as an agonist for the serotonin 5-HT2A receptor. When introduced to the bloodstream, it rapidly crosses the blood-brain barrier, altering neural firing patterns in the visual cortex and the default mode network (DMN). This results in the temporary dissolution of the ordinary sense of self and the perception of complex, multi-dimensional imagery.
Is DMT legal in Canada or the US?
In the US, DMT is a Schedule I substance. However, some cities have decriminalised “natural medicines.” In Canada, DMT is Schedule III, though certain religious groups and clinical researchers have received exemptions (Section 56) to use it legally.
Can you overdose on DMT?
While the lethal dose in humans is estimated to be much higher than a standard dose, “overdose” usually manifests as extreme psychological distress or “blacking out” the experience. Physical danger usually arises from interactions with other medications.
How long DMT stay in your system?
DMT is metabolized very quickly by the body. It is generally undetectable in standard drug tests within 24 hours.
